In 1958 Harold Macmillan, speaking in Canberra, said “Jaw-jaw is better than war-war”. Doubtless, after the Ukraine invasion President Putin of Russia expected a lot of ‘jaw-jaw’ huffing and puffing from Western powers unwilling to risk a real war which could rapidly turn nuclear, but perhaps failed to anticipate the level of coordinated economic responses from the West turning sanctions into an economic weapon. So, what will the consequences of this ‘economic war’ be, not just for Russia but also for the UK and USA and the EU, and indeed globally as the consequences of the war, the sanctions and the embargoes ripple out across the rest of the world?
